It takes a COMMUNITY: The Michael White Story

It takes a COMMUNITY: The Michael White Story

The tension was thick in room 306 of the Criminal Justice Center in Philadelphia on Wednesday. Michael White, 21, was being charged with killing Sean Schellenger. I was moved by the number of supporters present for Mr. White. It wasn’t just family and friends. It was neighbors, classmates, and even the bishop. It was a COMMUNITY that came out to support Michael White.

What is Michael’s story? Who is this young man?

Life wasn’t easy for Michael White growing up. His family situation was complicated and money was tight. Despite his struggles, he was working hard to carve a place for himself in world. He is a poet. . .

Carson Wentz, A Story

Carson Wentz, A Story

If I were writing a book, I couldn't pen a more devastating climax. This isn't just a football story. This is a story of a guy who achieved the American dream, through his God-given talent and hard work, dedication and the gift of leadership, and who raised our whole city along with him.

Carson Wentz never knew he would end up in the NFL…

A Tale of Two Cities: Eagles v Patriots Super Bowl LLI

A Tale of Two Cities: Eagles v Patriots Super Bowl LLI

A couple hundred years ago, an underdog cluster of colonies took on the most powerful dynasty in the world. Britain had a stronger economy and a squad of accomplished generals leading a seemingly unbeatable army that had, until then, crushed its opponents at will. The contest was so lopsided the bookies were offering up a hundred point spread.

Today, we Philadelphians find ourselves in the same position. Economically, Boston boasts median incomes of $75,000 (to Philly’s $34,000), and one of the best school systems in the country. Boston’s army is led by a coach and quarterback who have brought home the Lombardi Trophy five times. Philly’s Eagles have only twice before made it to the Super Bowl (I forget what happened). We have a rookie coach (whom—and let’s be honest here--some among us wanted to tar and feather after the first game). Our star quarterback went down in December (Merry Christmas!) and his spot had to be taken by a third-round draft pick we’d once given the boot to…

How I got Published

How I got Published

My first full-length novel was A Criminal Defense. After I completed it, I sent some query letters to publishers but never heard back, so the book sat on the shelf for two years.
Then, one day, I was at a professional conference of lawyers who do the same kind of legal work I do and I ran into a colleague, Anderson Harp, who was a published author. I explained to him that I had written a novel, and had sent query letters to publishers but never heard back. Andy told me I never would hear back; publishers pay no attention to unsolicited work. He told me that the key to getting something published was to…

Review of Since we Fell by Dennis Lehane

Review of Since we Fell by Dennis Lehane

Lehane usually gets it right. From the days of Mystic River, when I pick up a Lehane novel, I’m already convinced, this is going to be a great read.

Since We Fell feels like two books in one. The heroine, Rachel, is raised by a single-mother, a self-help, marriage expert who keeps a secret from her daughter: the identity of Rachel’s father. The last time Rachel saw her father, he was walking out the door, to her mother’s threat that, “I will expunge you.” Rachel’s only memories of the man are that he smells like corduroy and coffee…

One Innocent Man

One Innocent Man

It was 1990 in North Philadelphia. A group of men were in the process of robbing and shooting a small business owner, Domingo Martinez, while he was traveling in is car with $25,000 in cash to his check cashing store. At the same moment, miles away, 17 year-old Shaurn Thomas was standing in front of a juvenile master, having been arrested the night before and held for the night by police for trying to steal a motorcycle. Shaurn signed a subpoena to appear again in court a few months later and left with his sister.

When the police showed up to the crime scene and started asking questions, they spoke with several eyewitnesses who described…
